School of Stacy: OK, Cupid? A Networking 101 Experience

This Valentine’s day was a real treat! Our club had the best night listening to the one and only Stacy Long, who is a current Professor at CSUN. On this night we were able to get a full insight into what the P.R world is really like, as Stacy was able to share her past experiences with us. I found that the most interesting point she made was the action of an “informational interview”, which can be extremely beneficial for students who want to enter the P.R field. The whole point of an informational interview is to simply set a time and place with a professional in the field to just ask any questions you have. An informational interview is great because as a student you can figure out what you need to get right. She also shared with us the importance of being an intern and getting an intern job. Being an intern is so much more than just getting coffee or just doing busy work, it gives you the opportunity to show them what you’re made of, to be able to do the very best and more than what they expect from you. Towards the end of the night, all members practiced an elevator pitch. The three things that are most important are first your name, second what you are currently doing, and thirdly, what you expect to do in the future. Of course, all elevator pitches should be short, sweet, and concise.
